김상열의 “자연 너머의 본질을 좇는 새로운 여백”

김상열의 작품세계는 파도나 물결의 모티브를 매개로 한 ‘Landscape-섬(2005~2008)’시리즈, 나뭇가지와 이파리 그림자를 활용한 ‘Secret garden(2008~2020)’시리즈, 중첩된 산줄기 운무를 연상시키는 ‘wind garden(2020년 9월 이후)’시리즈 등으로 구분된다. 작품의 시각적 표상은 크게 다르지 않아도 앞의 두 시리즈(Landscape~Secret garden)가 구상성이 강한 반면, 최근의 ‘wind garden’ 시리즈부터는 추상성이 두드러진다. 하지만 2008년 하반기에 시작된 ‘Secret garden(비밀의 정원)’ 이후는 ‘실루엣(silhouette)’ 혹은 ‘허상(虛像)회화’의 특성을 유지하고 있다. 특히 최근 작품일수록 명도와 채도를 적절하게 활용한 절제된 색채추상의 면모도 보여준다.
현재의 작품스타일이 탄생한 것은 코로나19가 일상을 위협하기 시작했던 2020년 9월 즈음이다. 작가적 삶은 가뜩이나 집과 작업실만을 오가는 단조로움의 연속이었지만, 코로나로 인해 더더욱 침잠의 세계에 빠질 수밖에 없었다. 그러다가 작업실 난방을 위해 화목난로를 때던 차에 우연히 ‘재’가 눈에 들어왔다. 새로운 작업재료의 발견이었다. 마치 끝없는 인간의 욕망이 불타버린 후에 남은 부산물처럼, 재는 헛된 허영심마저 증발시킨 숭고함의 상징으로 다가왔다. 그 재를 검정 물감에 섞어 화면의 밑칠을 수차례 반복한 후, 다시 그 위에 일련의 색을 수십 차례 입혀가는 중첩과정들을 거쳐 완성한 것이 지금의 ‘wind garden’ 시리즈이다. 더없이 부드럽고 견고하며 농밀한 깊이를 자아내는 감성의 탄생과정이다.
이처럼 김상열의 색면은 서서히 공기층을 쌓아 자연의 나이테를 만들어내듯, 특유의 농도조절로 바람결의 피부를 완성해낸다. 아름다운 색조화장의 꽃은 파운데이션(foundation) 효과이듯, 아마도 재를 활용한 맨 밑층이 없었다면 지금의 시각효과도 많이 둔감해졌을 것이다. 김상열은 속된 티가 전혀 없이 맑고 아름다운 청아함을 자연의 얼굴빛에 선물했다. 세상에 ‘완전한 처음’이 있을까? 모든 일엔 연유(緣由)가 있듯, 시발점도 있기 마련이다. 김상열에게 ‘재의 발견’도 이미 십 수 년 전에 유사한 징조가 있었다. 미술학원에서 학생들을 가르치던 시절 아이들이 연필을 깎고 남긴 흑연가루들을 치우며 우연하게 ‘난로의 재’처럼, 번뜩이는 섬광이 떠올랐다. 흑연가루를 체에 내린 후 손으로 문지르니 일렁이는 파도가 되고, 숨 쉬는 산이 되었다.
“작업에서 반복된 행위에서 남겨진 반복된 선과 색은 산이 되고 강이 되고 길이 된다. ‘바람의 정원(Wind garden)’이라는 명제에서의 바람은 우리에게 주어진 많은 것들이 영원한 것이 아니라, 모든 것이 순간이며 찰나인 것이 곧 자연의 이치라는 생각이다. 그러나 이것이 허무라는 단어를 떠올리기보다는 찰나인 순간순간이 아름다운 기적이라고 말하고 싶다. 작품의 큰 틀은 언제나 자연이다. 나의 작품 속 자연은 단순한 재현을 위한 대상이 아니라, 예술의 본질을 향한 사유의 공간이 되길 원한다. 스스로 그러하다는 ‘자연(自然)’의 이치처럼, 자연스럽게 이미지가 발현되길 바라며, 자연스럽게 드러나고 스며들 듯이 피어나길 바란다.”
대개 자연이란 존재는 인간에게 경외감을 이끌어내는 숭고함의 대상이기도 하다. 그 자연물의 모티브를 온전하게 화폭에 옮긴다는 것은 작가에겐 쉽지 않은 과정이다. 어쩌면 ‘자연－自然’이란 이름처럼, 인위적인 계산보다 있는 그대로 순결한 ‘내려놓은 마음가짐’으로 대할 때 비로소 자연의 본 모습에 가까워질 수 있지 않을까. 김상열의 그림도 그렇다. 꾸민 듯 안 꾸민 듯, 부지불식간에 몸에 밴 향기처럼 어느 덧 스며든다. 보는 이의 오감육감을 매료시키는 부드러운 미학의 표본이다. 특히 정화(淨化)의 상징으로 여겨지는 ‘재’로부터 출발해, 신묘하게 중화(中和)된 담채 톤의 색조가 더욱 빛을 발한다. 아마도 김상열의 ‘wind garden’ 시리즈는 자연의 본질에 한층 더 다가설 수 있는 관문이 아닐까 싶다.
최근 작품 ‘wind garden’ 시리즈는 보다 자유로워진 감성을 자아낸다. 마치 ‘존재의 본질’을 ‘회화적 본질’로 보여주고 있는 듯하다. 이전 ‘Secret garden’ 시리즈에서 보여준 자연의 형상성이 떠난 자리엔 분무된 엷은 색조의 결만 남았다. 실제로 전작은 잎이 무성한 식물이나 나뭇가지를 화면에 올린 후 물감을 에어브러쉬(airbrush)로 분사해 ‘자연물을 캐스팅해내는 방식’을 선보였다. 하지만 지금은 최대한 회화의 기본요소로만 화면을 채워 ‘물성의 시각화보다 근원적인 질문’을 좇는 형국이다. 최소한의 구상적인 실루엣은 남았어도 추상성을 활용해 무엇에도 얽매이지 않은 열린 통감의 자유로움을 선사한다. 평소 “큰 틀에서 자연을 표현하지만, 저 너머의 본질을 향해 쉼 없이 묵묵히 걸어갈 것”이란 작가의 말이 그대로 투영되었다. 김상열에게 자연은 작품의 시작점이자 과정이며, 마지막의 끝점일 것이다. 그렇게 묵묵히 수행자적 행로를 가고 있다.

Kim Sang-yeol's work is mainly divided into three series: the "Landscape-Island (2005-2008)" series that used tides or waves as a medium, the "Secret Garden (2008-2020)" series that utilized shadows of branches and leaf, and the "Wind Garden (September 2020-current)" series illustrates clouds and fogs along overlapping mountain ranges. While the visual representation of the series resembles each other, the former two series suggest strong concepts, which contrasts with the abstract theme in the recent "Wind Garden" series. However, since the "Secret Garden" series, which Kim began to work from the second half of 2008, Kim has maintained the characteristic "silhouette" or "illusion" style in the latter series. In particular, in the more recent works of Kim, refined abstraction of color that brings both brightness and saturation together can be observed.
Kim's current style of art began around September 2020, when the pandemic COVID-19 emerged and spread around the world. A painter's lifestyle is already monotonous as the only places he would go are his home and studio even before the pandemic hit the world. With the COVID19, however, Kim's routine life became even more withdrawn. Then, "ashes" in the wood stove caught his eyes when he was trying to warm up his studio. Kim found a new material for his work. Ashes, like a byproduct of human's endlessly blazing desire endless human desire, came to Kim as a symbol of unearthliness that evaporated even the vain vanity. In the latest "Wind Garden" series, Kim mixes the ashes in black paint and repeatedly undercoats the screen, and coats the screen with a series of colors dozens of times. It is the Kim's method of creating emotions and senses that evoke softness, solidness, and dense depth.
As such, Kim Sang-yeoul's color field slowly builds up through layers like tree rings in nature, completing the skin of the wind with unique control technique in density. Like cosmetic foundation is to colorful makeup, the layers of ashes are to the visual effect of the work. Kim presented a gift of clear, beautiful purity without any signs of vulgarness to nature's complexion. Is there such a thing that has the "perfect first" in the world? Just as everything happens and exists for a reason, there exists a starting point for everything, and Kim's "discovery of ashes" already had been foreshadowed since over 10 years ago. During his teaching years at an art academy, Kim was cleaning the graphite powder left by the students on the table when it hit him like a lightning bolt, like the "ashes of the wood stove." When the graphite powder was sieved and rubbed onto a canvas with fingers, waves and mountains came to life.
"The repeated lines and colors from repeated actions become mountains, rivers, and roads. The wind in the "Wind Garden" presents the idea that many of the things that we are given are not eternal but rather moments, which is the way things work in nature. However, instead of feeling nihil, I see that every moment becomes a beautiful miracle. The big outline of my work is always nature. I desire nature in my work to become a space in which the essence of nature can be pursued, rather than become an object for reproduction. As the nature exists according to its reasons and laws, I hope an image will naturally manifest, bloom, and permeate through."

In general, nature is often considered as the subject of sublime that draws awe from us, which, for an artist, is not easy to entirely transfer the motif of the natural object onto a canvas. Perhaps, like the name "nature" suggests, we can only get closer to the true essence of nature when we approach with a "pure mind" and not artificial calculation. So is Kim's painting. His work effortlessly permeates like perfume, and it is the perfect model of soft aesthetics that fascinates the audience's senses. In particular, starting with "ashes," a symbol of a by-product of purification, the mysteriously neutralized tone of light colors stands out even more. Perhaps Kim's "Wind Garden" series is the gateway to get closer to the essence of nature.

Kim's latest work, "Wind Garden" series suggest unconstrained free feeling, presenting the "essence of existence" through the "essence in painting." After the forms of nature in the previous work the "Secret Garden," it left behind sprayed, light colors. In fact, the Secret Garden series introduced a "casting method of natural objects" by placing leafy plants or branches on the screen and spraying paint with an airbrush on top. However, the screen is now filled with only the basic elements of painting, pursuing "fundamental questions rather than visualization of physical properties." With only minimal silhouette remaining, Kim presents abstraction for an open sense of freedom without being bound by any constraints. Kim's words, "I present nature in a big frame, but I will continue to work to find the essence beyond." For Kim, nature is the starting point, the final point, and all points in between. Likewise, he silently walks on the solitary and ascetic path.
